                                         :~:ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL:~:

The Angels were created by God to serve and love him. Angels are spiritual beings, and they have a free will to choose to love God or not. When the Angels were told they had to protect human beings because man would be created in the image of God, some Angels said yes while others, led by satan, said no. Satan was the most beautiful Angel, the head of the Choir of Seraphim, which is the highest Choir of all the Angels (according to St. Thomas, there are nine Choirs of Angels). He was filled with pride because of his position; he was not satisfied with what God gave him, and he would not obey God to serve and love human beings, thinking that he was too beautiful and too great to humble himself in service. So he rebelled against God and tricked a third of the Angels into thinking that he was more powerful than God and that he would take over his throne.

Then Michael the Archangel, an Angel from the Archangel Choir, one of the lowest Choirs, stood in front of satan and cried out, "WHO IS LIKE GOD?" (In fact, his name, "Michael," means "who is like God" in Hebrew). No one is like God! And the battle began, with Michael the Archangel leading the good Angels in battle against Satan and his angels. The good Angels won the victory for the glory of God and his creation. As for Michael the Archangel, he became the first saint and leader of all the Angels, and was praised by every Angel in heaven for leading them to the love of God from which satan wanted to draw them. Michael is one of the seven angels who stand before the throne of God, and a special protector of the Catholic Church. We call on him for help against the devils, asking him to defend us from evil and help us win victory in the battle of life.
