    Sisters of St. Francis

Touched by the love of Christ Crucified and inspired by the joyful witness of St. Francis of Assisi, Mother M. Anselma founded the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in a little village in northern Germany. Today, nearly 2,000 Sisters in seven countries follow the Lord Jesus in our Franciscan way of life.

Like St. Francis, we have been called by God to take an active part in rebuilding the Church, which was born from the Heart of the Crucified Christ. Flowing out of His open side, the charism entrusted to our community is to make the Merciful Love of Christ visible in our service.

We do this through a variety of apostolic activities: Hospital work, care to the elderly, education, day care, CCD, parish work, and social services.

At the very center of our consecrated life is our union with the Heart of Jesus Christ, renewed and deepened through our encounter with Him in community and personal prayer.
    • It is in our daily celebration of the Holy Eucharist that our community life reaches its climax and is renewed again.
    • Four times a day, we chant the Liturgy of the Hours as a community and unite ourselves with Jesus in His prayer to the Father on behalf of all mankind.
    • We have the privilege of daily praying before the exposed Blessed Sacrament in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in Alton, Illinois.
    • We remain in Jesus' love for us through daily Meditation, Scripture reading, examination of conscience, the Sacrament of Penance, and meditation on the Way of the Cross.
    • Our devotion to Our Lady is expressed especially through our daily praying of the rosary.
